Alfonso Regatta & Sutter Cup - “Three Regatta Regatta”

April 25 & 26, 2009 @ GYC. NOR -

Sailing Committee Meetings – 2nd Wednesday of every month. We also recommend joining US Sailing to get your copy of the new rules that started this year & subscription to Sailing World Magazine.

TWO NEW BOATS!

Memorial Hospital has become the Title sponsor of the Jr. Summer Sailing Regatta! $2,000!  We also received another $1,000 in sponsors from two other medical businesses. With a total $3,000!

Jr. Raffle @ Challenge Cup - Need to start gathering items for the Liquor Basket. You can drop them off in the office next time your down at the club. Last year we raised $800! It the committee’s goal to sell $1,500 in tickets this year! You can purchase tickets from club anytime or go to the www.gulfportyachtclub.org to get the Internet Special! Look for the basket! Ruthie McMullen (228-860-6691) and Shannon Weatherly (228-234-2303) are heading up the efforts this year so, please feel contact them for tickets & donations. Do not have to be present to win.

The proceeds from these two events will add to $3,500! That is enough to purchase TWO Open Bic High Performance Sailboats! The committee has also worked a deal with the local rep (Liquid Force) in Fort Walton to leave a few loaners for the summer. The price to purchase a demo boat is only $1,695 and is available for anyone. Yes!  I am saying is that we will have at least 4 Open Bic’s for the Three Regatta April 25 & 26! These really are great & safe boats and it will be a wonderful gift to increase the fleet every year with these fund raisers. Ali Bass & Committee did a great job pulling in the money last year. But, we still need your help with Challenge Cup Sponsors & items for the raffle. Please call (228-323-1336)

Challenge Cup @ GYC June 18-21, 2009- www.challengecup.org

First committee meeting is at 5:00pm Feb. 11 before the sailing committee

Once again we get the privilege to host the prestigious regatta. By using last year as a starting point the committee and staff are headed in the right direction tweaking the logistics out to cut costs while improving the product. We are now at the point where we have to start finding sponsors.  The committee has prepared extra sponsorship packets for members distribute friends and colleagues located in the office. Like last year we are going to all the extras that make it remarkable weekend. Live Music, great food, free massages, kattack yacht tracking, daily trophies, & plenty sailing stories!

The 2008 Sailing Banquet was a fabulous evening. The ballroom was filled with a little over 200 campers, family members, and friends. It was a magical event with everyone dressed up in their finest clothes and their hair combed and their nails did. You could not recognize half of the campers since they weren’t in there usual summer attire of board shorts, sandals, and life jackets. It started off with the instructors and campers eating first followed by the parents. The kitchen and wait staff prepared a wonderful spread of a garden salad, grilled & fried chicken breast, French fries, corn, and banana pudding.  The ceremony started with all of the 86 campers receiving their certificate of completion than followed by the overall sailing camp awards. It was a great sight watching Commodore Atherton having to get down on one knee to hand out and get a picture with the younger kids. After the sailing camp awards we started a new tradition at GYC and gave out all of the new Overall Club Awards. These awards are something that I felt that needed to be done. This year I added “Sailor of the Year”, “Female Sailor of the Year”, “One Design Sailor of the Year”, and “PHRF Sailor of the Year”. All of the recipients of these trophies earned it buy sailing and caring about GYC year round. Every single sailor is a winner and should not feel bad about their performance. So please pick your head up and get down here and go for a sail to improve your skills. We the Sailing Committee would like to thank everyone that attended this year’s banquet. It was a good gesture to show support for all the GYC sailors. And I personally would like to thank everyone for keeping me around for so long. It was a great and loving feeling I felt when I got a standing ovation from the entire crowd. I am very proud to work at such a prestigious place with fantastic members. I will be here at least one more year. At one point I will have to grow up and find a real job in the real world. Until then….. HIT THE TREES!
